Mira Vista GC, Aurora. Architect Unknown, 1972. NLE
This was originally the Lowry Air Force Base course. When the base closed in the early 90s, it was taken over jointly by Denver and Aurora (the border actually runs right through the course). In 2008, it was closed and became CommonGround, a fantastic Tom Doak design that bears little resemblance to what was there before. The old course was a pretty bare bones affair in terms of routing but offered a few interesting holes. The 4th, in a similar spot to the same hole at CommonGround, turned left around wetlands, but didn’t truly interact with the feature. The 11th (in the northwest corner of the property) was a long par 3 from an island tee to a green defended by bunkers in front. And the 17th was a difficult downhill par 3 to a green set between water on the left on a bunker right. It was a pretty spot but that hasn’t gone away and the course that replaced Mira Vista gets everything out of the site in a way that this course didn’t even suggest was possible.
